Lego Land Rover Defender

I finished building the Lego Defender today. The box was a birthday present and a fun alternative to having the real Land Rover Defender.

It was great fun building this car and the level of detail in it is amazing. There are some easy mistakes that you can make while assembling different parts of the engine and gearbox. These video tutorials helped me overcome them. The led lighting kit that you see in the pictures is an aftermarket product from Light My Bricks.

Dit wil je écht niet weten

I finished reading ‘Dit wil je écht niet weten’ by Huib Modderkolk today. This was a nice and quick read for me. A book full of information that I was technically aware of but not tying together as a whole.

This book is worth a read if you are technically savvy, interested in geo political affairs and like spy stories. Huib Modderkolk is a respected Dutch journalist writing for ‘the Volkskrant’. I do hope that he will be publishing more books in the future.

Runlog – 20240428 – 14km trail run

I finished my 1st ever trail run today on the island of Terschelling, which is located in the north of the Netherlands. We are here for a 5 day family trip and I must say that the nature on the island is astonishing. We are for sure going to enjoy ourselves here.

I got the tip to try trail running from Thijs who does this kind of running quite often. It’s good fun and I guess I will be trying this again sometime soon and closer to home. I do need to get myself some additional shoes for this.

All the light we cannot see

I finished reading ‘All the light we cannot see’ by Anthony Doerr last night. This book was a reading tip from Thijs as I’m going to spend part of my summer holiday in the St. Malo region this year.

I appreciated reading this novel, it’s a beautiful story taking place in Germany and France during World War II. I will skip the Netflix series though, I’ve heard from to many people that it has comes nowhere close to the original story.

12 Leadership reflections

A simple list with things that are very true for anyone in a leadership position.

  1. When your best people leave, it’s not them. It’s you.
  2. You don’t have a remote work issue. You have trust issues.
  3. Leadership that can’t handle feedback won’t survive change.
  4. If your actions don’t align with your values, your employees won’t trust you.
  5. Your diversity program is hollow if your team all looks the same.
  6. Underpaying your people doesn’t make you cost-effective. It makes you short-sighted.
  7. A toxic culture will tarnish your brand, no matter how good your products are.
  8. The customer experience will never exceed the employee experience.
  9. Micromanagement isn’t a sign of dedication, it’s a warning sign.
  10. Talent won’t stay if their growth isn’t your priority.
  11. Leading by fear creates teams that underperform.
  12. If you don’t pay people what they’re worth, someone else will.

These are 12 points to reflect on every few months. All are common sense, yet still valuable to be reminded off.

An Evil Mind

I finished reading ‘An Evil Mind’ by Chris Carter late last night. This is the 6th book in the Robert Hunter series and probably the one which gave me the most anxiety till date. This book is a psychological thriller and a joy to read. The book has given me shivers several times due to horrifying storytelling.

I won’t be going to the next book in the Hunter series immediately as I’m following up on a reading tip from Thijs first. He advised me to read the book ‘All the light we cannot see’ by Anthony Doerr in advance of my summer holiday plans for this year.

My book ratings for the Robert Hunter series:

  • The Crucifix Killer (2009) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • The Executioner (2010) ⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • The Night Stalker (2011) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • The Death Sculptor (2012) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • One by One (2013) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  • An Evil Mind (2014) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The books that I still need to read in this series:

  • I Am Death (2015)
  • The Caller (2017)
  • Gallery of the Dead (2018)
  • Hunting Evil (2019)
  • Written in Blood (2020)
  • Genesis (2022)
  • The Death Watcher (2024)

Summer holiday 2024 plans

My wife and I have been working on detailing out our summer holiday plans for this year.

We are going to do a family roadtrip covering Southern England, the Island of Jersey and the Britany region in France. The total distance that we will be covering will be around 2000 km in 23 days.

This is the first time for us as family to not traveling somewhere where sunshine is guaranteed. We came up with this alternative plan in Northern Europe as Southern Europe was far too hot during the summer of 2023.

Do read this post if you are thinking about a similar trip, with or without teenagers. I will be collecting fun things that we have planned in this post and during our travels with the tag Summer2024. For reference, we are traveling as a 4 person family with two teenagers aged 16 (boy) and 13 (girl).

My Blogroll

I’ve never given up on RSS and I have been hosting my own FreshRSS instance for quite some time now to support my needs of following many websites that have my interest. RSS is not dead for sure, and becoming more and more valuable now that people are moving towards the decentralized web.

FreshRSS has a cool feature, you can subscribe to OPML files created by others, say someones blogroll, resulting in dynamically populated RSS feeds. By subscribing to other people’s blogrolls I’m able to dynamically follow new content being written elsewhere on the web. The idea is simple, follow the blogroll of someone you find interesting and you will probably find more interesting content through their network too.

So, here is my contribution with my carefully curated list of goto websites (Dutch and English). These websites are in the categories of Apple, Technology, Arts, Photography, Nature, Leadership and Formula 1.

One by One

I finished reading ‘One by One’ by Chris Carter last night. One by One is the fifth book in the series about detective Robert Hunter and his partner Garcia. I’ve been reading the first five books in Dutch and enjoyed all of them until now. These crime stories are easy to read and help me relax at the end of the day or during travels.

There are thirteen books written in this series till date. From book 6 onwards they aren’t translated to Dutch yet, so I will be switching to the English versions from now on.

I’m starting with ‘An evil mind’ tonight.
