My wife and I have been working on detailing out our summer holiday plans for this year.
We are going to do a family roadtrip covering Southern England, the Island of Jersey and the Britany region in France. The total distance that we will be covering will be around 2000 km in 23 days.
This is the first time for us as family to not traveling somewhere where sunshine is guaranteed. We came up with this alternative plan in Northern Europe as Southern Europe was far too hot during the summer of 2023.
Do read this post if you are thinking about a similar trip, with or without teenagers. I will be collecting fun things that we have planned in this post and during our travels with the tag Summer2024. For reference, we are traveling as a 4 person family with two teenagers aged 16 (boy) and 13 (girl).
Itinerary
The beauty of living in Europe is the ease of traveling across the continent and to the UK. We are doing all our travels this summer with our own car and booked the Canal Train and Ferry to get us across to the the UK, Jersey and France.

Hotels, Apartment and Family House
We are combining different types of stays throughout this trip. For our London days we booked a family room in The Mitre Hampton Court Hotel. The hotel is situated on the west side of London, close to the M25 and has good parking for us to leave the car behind at the hotel. Who knows, we might even take a boat from the hotel to the city center.
We booked a nice apartment for our days in Torquay. It’s nice to be able to have an apartment here, so that we can do some grocery shopping for breakfast and diner ourselves for these days.
For Jersey we decided to do the same as for London, we booked a hotel. Mainly because it was so hard for us to find a decent apartment on the island. We are staying at La Haule Manor, again very close to the coast of the island.
Our final stop is Britany, France. We are a few kilometers away from the city of Saint-Malo where we rented a family house with a pool. Fingers crossed for some decent weather in Britany these days.
Planned activities
We are still planning activities for the whole holiday trip, especially for everything outside of London. For that we still need to do some upfront reading to figure out our possibilities in each of these locations.
2,5 days in London
As of now we have planned for the following family activities in London.
- Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace
- London city walk along the highlights, including the Big-Ben, Piccadilly Circus, Tower Bridge, Covent Garden and SOHO.
- Shopping in Oxford Street and Regent Street and visiting Build a Bear for my daughter
- Drinks and Diner at Darwin Brasserie
- Lunch at Sketch
- Mamma Mia! at Novello Theatre
